: ANALOGY AND METAPHOR
(Program Content Description):
Metaphors and analogies “carry clients beyond” their blocks and help them to absorb what could otherwise be too difficult to take in. In this course Carolyn Costin, a therapist, and Dr. Jen Gaudiani, a physician, provide participants with several metaphors and analogies they use with patients that to help them grasp several concepts about their illness and recovery. They have found that their patients appreciate the use of metaphors and analogies.

Carolyn Costin MFT., is a renowned eating disorder author, therapist, speaker and consultant. Carolyn founded Monte Nido, the first residential eating disorder treatment program, and is one of the world’s leading eating disorder experts.
In 2017, Carolyn opened her Institute, where she trains clinicians, coaches, mentors, and others.
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe how the bus wreck analogy can be used with patients to help them get past the idea that they might not be sick enough to warrant help
2. Describe at least one reason why using analogies can be helpful in the therapeutic process
3. Describe at least one analogy that can be used to help patients understand weight changes and/or metabolic shifts
This course is intended for all health and mental health providers, educators, and researchers interested in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.
Relevant Teaching/Learning Methods/Course Materials
This course is offered via an online format. Instructional methods utilized in this course include online reading materials, a video handout, a course quiz, a course satisfaction survey, and a pre-recorded didactic presentation using clinical case studies to link learning to clinical practice. An online discussion board is available to encourage collaborative learning by allowing participants to discuss the material, share ideas, and get feedback from other participants. (Use of online discussion board is not required for course credit.) Additionally, learners are provided with the contact information for the course presenter and course administrator for any questions or concerns related to course content or operation.
While there is no research directly testing the efficacy of the approach used in this course, the interventions described rely upon core cognitive behavioral, client-centered, family systems, developmental, and attachment theory concepts, all with extensive empirical foundations. Additionally, as founder of Monte Nido & Affiliates, Carolyn Costin initiated a peer-reviewed outcome study of the program’s success while under her clinical direction and while using many of the approaches in this course.
