Course Summary (Program Content Description):
Things to Know About Treating Eating Disorders is a fundamental overview of eating disorder treatment including information on how best to do an overall assessment. The content includes basic information on the causes of eating disorders such as the influence of genetics, culture and psychological factors.  Insight on how eating disorder behaviors serve as adaptive functions is described in a practical and clinically useful way. The mainstream accepted philosophical approaches to treatment are discussed in the written material, but Carolyn’s particular insights and clinical expertise are added by her in the video interview.

Brief Biography:
Carolyn Costin MFT., is a renowned eating disorder author, therapist, speaker and consultant. Carolyn founded Monte Nido, the first residential eating disorder treatment program, and is one of the world’s leading eating disorder experts.
In 2017, Carolyn opened her Institute, where she trains clinicians, coaches, mentors, and others.

Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

1. List one standardized test to use in an eating disorder assessment
2. List one risk factor associated with the development of an eating disorder
3. Describe the concept of Eating Disorder Self and Healthy Self 

Target Audience:
This course is intended for all health and mental health providers, educators, and researchers interested in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.

Relevant Teaching/Learning Methods/Course Materials:
This course is offered via an online format.  Instructional methods utilized in this course include online reading materials, a video handout, a course quiz, a course satisfaction survey, and a pre-recorded didactic presentation using clinical case studies to link learning to clinical practice. Additionally, learners are provided with the contact information for the course presenter and course administrator for any questions or concerns related to course content or operation.

Credibility:
While there is no research directly testing the efficacy of the approach used in this course, the interventions described rely upon core cognitive behavioral, client-centered, family systems, developmental, and attachment theory concepts, all with extensive empirical foundations.  Additionally, as founder of Monte Nido & Affiliates, Carolyn Costin initiated a peer-reviewed outcome study of the program’s success while under her clinical direction and while using many of the approaches in this course.
