Course Summary (Program Content Description):
This course provides an interview and supporting material where therapist, author and eating disorder expert, Carolyn Costin discusses how she brings Care of the Soul into her clinical work with those who have eating disorders. Carolyn describes for the audience how to teach clients the concepts of Ego and Soul and help them distinguish between the two. Clinicians will learn how to help clients understand the function of their ego mind in terms of negotiating the world and having a separate identify but how they are far more than just their ego self. Clinicians will learn how to assist clients in reconnecting with their soul self, their true essence the witnessing presence that is not concerned with numbers on the scale or achievements or judgments. Carolyn believes that a large part of her success with eating disorder clients involves her Care of the Soul approach and gives anyone taking this course numerous ideas and suggestions for how to approach this topic with clients.

Brief Biography:
Carolyn Costin is a renowned eating disorder author, therapist, speaker and consultant. Carolyn founded Monte Nido, the first residential eating disorder treatment program, and is one of the world’s leading eating disorder experts.

Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

1. Distinguish at least one feature between ego and soul
2. Describe one way to help clients bring soul back into their life
3. Briefly describe the concept of acceptance vs resistance

Target Audience:
This course is intended for all health and mental health providers, educators, and researchers interested in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.

Relevant Teaching/Learning Methods/Course Materials:
This course is offered via an online format.  Instructional methods utilized in this course include online reading materials, a video handout, a course quiz, a course satisfaction survey, and a pre-recorded didactic presentation using clinical case studies to link learning to clinical practice.  Additionally, learners are provided with the contact information for the course presenter and course administrator for any questions or concerns related to course content or operation.

Credibility:
While there is no research directly testing the efficacy of the approach used in this course, the interventions described rely upon core cognitive behavioral, client-centered, family systems, developmental, and attachment theory concepts, all with extensive empirical foundations.  Additionally, as founder of Monte Nido & Affiliates, Carolyn Costin initiated a peer-reviewed outcome study of the program’s success while under her clinical direction and while using many of the approaches in this course.
